Mrs. Eleanor Gail McDavid McCutchen Smith, age 89, and a resident of Martin, TN, passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2026, at West Tennessee Volunteer Hospital in Martin, TN. She was born on May 4, 1936, in Willard, KY, to the late Daniel Watt McDavid and Beatrice Clark Robinson. Known by many as "Miss Gail," Mrs. Smith was a longtime second-grade teacher at Martin Elementary and Martin Primary schools, an active member of the Martin First United Methodist Church and the Laura Wells Circle at Martin FUMC, an active member of the 20th Century Club of Martin, and an inactive member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (for teachers) and the Weakley County Retired Teachers Association.
Mrs. Smith has been a resident of Weakley County since 1964. She was the valedictorian of the 1953 class of Hitchins (KY) High School and graduated from Berea College in Berea, KY, in 1957 with a bachelor's degree in Education. Years later, she obtained a master's degree in Education from the University of Tennessee at Martin. She enjoyed cross-stitching, flowers, reading, and especially loved watching football and basketball, including the University of Tennessee, University of Kentucky, and Martin Westview sports.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband of 37 years, Robert G. "Bob" Smith of Martin, TN; one daughter, Tomi (George Pasley) McCutchen of Martin, TN; one son, Shawn (Carol) McCutchen of Avondale, PA; one stepson, Greg (Liz) Smith of Little Rock, AR; four grandchildren, Jesse (Cassidy) Parrish of Bradyville, TN, Michael (Kayla) McCutchen of Nashville, TN, Matthew (Megan) McCutchen of Madison, WI, and Stuart McCutchen of Dallas, TX; three step-grandchildren, Brandon (Rebecca) Smith, Taylor (Parker) McMillan, and Chad (Taryn) Smith; two great-grandchildren, Isaac McCutchen of Nashville, TN, and Xailee Parrish of Bradyville, TN; eight step-great-grandchildren; one niece, Julie (Herbie) Jackson of Grayson, KY; one nephew, Jim Robinson of Grayson, KY; three brothers, Morris (Loma) Robinson of Grayson, KY, Jack Clark Robinson of Santa Barbara, CA, and William "Bill" Robinson of Catlettsburg, KY.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her stepfather, Ernest Robinson; one stepson, Scott Smith; one sister-in-law, Sandy Robinson; and two half-brothers.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 27, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Martin First United Methodist Church, and on Saturday, March 28, 2026, beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Martin.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Martin at 11:00 a.m.
Pastor George Pasley; Jack Clark Robinson, ofm; Pastor Sharon Austell; and Pastor Amanda Crice will officiate.
Burial will follow at Gardner Cemetery.
