Dr. Gary E. Brown, Professor Emeritus, age 82, and resident of Martin, TN, passed away on Monday, June 22, 2026.
He was born on December 7, 1943, in Fort Worth, TX to the late Lee Eugene Brown and Juanita Willoughby Brown.
Gary received his undergraduate degree from Texas Christian University in 1966 and stayed on as a research fellow in the medical psychology receiving his PH. D in 1970. He spent 38 years at the University of Tennessee at Martin, 24 as chair of the psychology department where he published over 30 journal articles, several books and E-books. He maintained a private practice from 1970-2019. In 2017, he retired from the university and founded the Children's Treatment Center because the Autism epidemic had expanded his practice and required his full time. He was a member of the Tennessee Psychological Association, Psi Chi, Sigma Xi, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was known for his love of running, fishing, sailing his boat, playing guitar in his rock band, drawing, his dry sense of humor, and so much more. Gary will be most remembered by the number of families he helped with neurodiverse children.
Gary is survived by wife, Carolyn Suda Brown of 59 years; daughters, Carrie (Reid) Henderson of Murfreesboro, TN, Jody (John) Hatler of Martin, TN; brother, Alan (Phyllis) Brown of Edinburg, TX; granddaughters, Haley (Carlos) Henderson of Murfreesboro, TN, Cara Brooke Hatler of Martin, TN, and Cambry Hatler of Martin, TN; grandson, Ty (Marcel) Henderson of Murfreesboro, TN; great-grandchild, Grace Pretzantzin of Murfreesboro, TN.
