James D. “Jim” Tilley, a beloved member of the Pingree Grove community, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at the age of 86.
Jim was born on December 23, 1938, in the small town of Dresden, Tennessee. He was the cherished son of the late James Harold Tilley and Mae (née Darnell) Tilley. For over three decades, Jim called Pingree Grove home, where he was deeply involved in the community, serving admirably as a Village Trustee for 8 years. A dedicated professional, he spent over 35 years at International Harvester, working diligently as a millwright. His commitment to his trade and the labor movement was evident through his proud membership in UAW Local #6, where he took on various roles, including shop steward and leadership positions on several union committees, ultimately serving as president and vice president of safety. Jim's faith was an integral part of his life. He was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Elgin, where he found a sense of belonging and purpose among fellow congregants. Additionally, he held membership in the respected Barrington Lodge #522 A.F. & A.M., and for many years, he enjoyed the camaraderie and fellowship offered by the Moose Lodge. Jim's legacy lives on through his loving family.
He is survived by his two daughters, Lisa (Mitch) Hanley and Carrie (Doug Kolpak) Tilley, who will always treasure his guidance and support. His grandchildren—Shannon (Samuel) Croom, Patrick (Stephanie) Hanley, Kyle (Chelsea Lane) Kolpak, Kelley Kolpak, and Kody Kolpak—carry forward his spirit and values. He also took great delight in his role as a great-grandfather to Kendall and Austin Croom, as well as Logan and Tristan Hanley. Jim leaves behind his siblings, Jean Bradberry, Rose (Ray) Jubera, and Edgar Ray (Toni) Tilley, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were touched by his kindness and warmth.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his longtime companion, Margaret A. “Peggy” Kline, who held a special place in his heart.
A gathering to honor Jim's life will be held on Monday, July 14, 2025, from 2 p.m. until the time of the funeral services at 5:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, located at 1735 W. Highland Avenue in Elgin. Pastor Greg Huguley will lead the service, providing a heartfelt tribute to Jim's life and legacy.
